Revox A77

Built from 1967 - 1977
The Revox A77 is still one of the most widely used semi-professional analog tape machines. Worldwide, about 450000 devices were built in innumerable variations.
The device is considered particularly robust and service-friendly. The professional design, with three motors and three sound heads, was well received not only in home use, but was also used by many small recording studios and broadcasters. The following versions of the A77 were made:

MKI

The success story began in 1967 with the first version of the A77. With the initially small teething troubles the MK II was quickly introduced.
The Revox A77 was after the success of the tube tape machines, the first fully transistorized tape machine and hit like lightning. The robustness, operability and the sound strength speak for the A77!

MKII

In 1968 the  MK II  was introduced.
The fixed reversing bolt used in the MKI got replaced by a reassurance lever.

MKIII

The biggest changes in the versions always affected the look. So the third version has a gray lower front panel, the VU meters now have a silver scale and are illuminated.

MKIV

The A77 MK IV, built in 1973, has silver buttons and a blue Revox imprint.
Technically, very little has happened in the 10 years of production. But you must not ignore the changes!

Accessories for Revox A77

Dust Cover

The dust cover in rectangular shape is more often than the second variant, which also encloses the coils.
The rectangular hood encloses the complete upper and lower front and thus protects all operating devices.

Dust Cover

The second variant (photo still follows) also encloses the large 26 cm coils. Only the NAB adapters with goblets do not fit underneath. Likewise, here are the controls of the tape machine open. If you still want to use high-quality NAB adapters under the hood, we recommend NAB adapters with aluminum grip ring.

NAB-Adapter with grip ring

To enable you to operate the Revox A77 with dust cover and high-quality NAB adapters, darklab magnetics has developed a NAB adapter with grip ring.
Of course, these adapters also fit any other Studer or Revox tape machine!

Cable remote control for Revox A77 in the original packaging

Remote control

The wired remote control may seem strange today, but was once pure luxury.
There were no other possibilities like smartphones, infra-red or even ultrasound, everything came later.
In the original packaging, the remote control is extremely rare!

tape cutter

Head cover with band scissors were available as an accessory from Revox. This made gluing the tapes very easy.

Tacho sensor

Very often the tacho sensors break apart.
The case is very brittle and sticks to the rubber mat, which in turn sticks to the chassis.
These sensors with the bell of the sound engine cause mechanical whistling at 800 Hz or 1.6 kHz.

tonemotor

The sound engines have compared to the sound engines of the B77 a shorter motor shaft.
The motors are precision parts and should be handled accordingly. The shafts are ground to 1/1000 mm (1 μm)!

counter

The first counters still had gears that caused a lot of noise. Then counters with toothed belts were introduced. We offer suitable digital meters for all Revox A77, B77 and PR99 MK I with LED display. These are much easier to read!

VU-Meter

The VU meters of the Revox A77 are also highly sensitive precision parts and should be handled with great care. Especially the old VU meters are falling apart. Sometimes the pointer is next to it, sometimes the magnet is stuck.

tape heads

nowhere is so much more bumbling done than with the tape heads! Lapped heads are sold as new , then it is said; a head mirror of 5 mm is wanted, and so on. If used heads, then only by trusting business partners!
